How the digital SAT works
The SAT is now taken on a laptop or tablet in the College Board's Bluebook app. It is shorter than the old paper test and adapts to the student as they go.
| Section | Questions | Time | How it's split |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reading and Writing | 54 | 64 minutes | Two modules of 32 minutes |
| Math | 44 | 70 minutes | Two modules of 35 minutes |
About 2 hours 14 minutes of testing, with a 10-minute break between the two sections.
It adapts by module
How a student does on the first module of each section decides whether the second module is easier or harder. A strong first module opens the door to the top scores.
Scoring
Each section is scored from 200 to 800, for a total of 400 to 1600. Scores come back in days, not weeks.
Calculators
A calculator is allowed on all of Math, and a graphing calculator (Desmos) is built into the app.
Reading looks different
Passages are short, often a single paragraph, with one question each, so students need speed and precision more than stamina.
How we teach it
Our SAT class meets once a week: an hour of math and an hour of reading and writing, with at most 12 students. It runs on an 8-week cycle, so your child can join any week, and week 8 is always a full timed practice section.
